Pattern Repeat: Why It Changes Everything

What pattern repeat means

Every wallpaper with a repeating design has a vertical distance before the pattern starts over. If the repeat is 24 inches, the design at 0 inches matches the design at 24, 48, 72 inches, and so on. To make seams invisible, each strip must start at a point that aligns with this cycle.

How it affects your estimate

Without pattern repeat, a 96-inch wall with a 24-inch repeat needs strips cut at 96 inches. With repeat alignment, each strip must be rounded up to the next repeat boundary. That means 96 inches becomes 96 (already a multiple of 24). But a 90-inch wall would need strips at 96 inches (next multiple of 24). That extra 6 inches per strip adds up fast.

Random match wallpapers

Some wallpapers are labeled "random match" or have a 0-inch repeat. These do not need vertical alignment at seams. You can cut strips at exact wall height with minimal waste. If your roll says random match, enter 0 for pattern repeat.

Straight match vs. drop match

Straight match means the pattern aligns horizontally across strips. Drop match means every other strip is offset by half the repeat distance. Drop match creates less waste at the top of the wall but requires more careful planning. This calculator handles both by rounding up to the next repeat boundary.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring pattern repeat. This is the number one cause of buying too few rolls. Always check the label.
  • Measuring in feet but entering inches. Double-check your unit selections. 8 feet is 96 inches.
  • Forgetting to add waste. Even experienced decorators need extra for trimming, mistakes, and future repairs.
  • Not buying all rolls at once. Dye lots vary between production batches. Buy everything you need in one order.
  • Assuming all walls are the same height. Older homes often have uneven ceilings. Measure each wall at both ends and the center.

Troubleshooting Tricky Walls

Sloped ceilings
Enter the tallest point as wall height. The calculator will overestimate, which is safer. For the cutting guide, measure each strip individually along the slope.
Alcoves and recesses
Add the alcove depth to your total wall width. Treat the alcove as part of the main wall for panel planning.
Multiple walls (full room)
Add all wall widths together into one total width. The calculator treats the room as one continuous wall, which is how wallpaper is actually hung.
Walls over 12 feet
Standard rolls may not yield full-length strips. Check if your wallpaper comes in double or triple rolls, or plan for a horizontal seam (not recommended for patterned paper).
